Postpartum Recovery The definition of recovery is “to return to a normal state of health, mind, or strength.” Postpartum is an interesting time to allow yourself TO recover because what even is your normal state?!? Your body hasn’t felt completely your own in 10 months, sleep is a myth, and somehow you now have to take care of a new human while having 4 more loads of laundry to do than before. It doesn’t help that our society is constantly screaming at us that we must get up, we must get back to work, we must get the house clean, we must compare ourselves to that mom on social media. Your postpartum journey is just that - a journey. And when I say it can take 6 weeks or more, I mean that it can take up to 2 years. So allow yourself some grace, allow yourself to slow down or to speed up if that’s what you really need. Listen to your body. Remember that self care is not selfish. Colostrum, often called “liquid gold,” is the first milk your body produces. You may notice it while you’re still pregnant or right after birth. If breastfeeding is your journey, it is the milk your baby will be nursing before your milk comes in. Colostrum is high in vitamins, minerals, antibodies, and protein. Colostrum is incredibly nutrient dense - even in really small amounts. My top tips for good sleep: 1. Have a consistent bedtime and bedtime routine - this is something you can start really early. A bedtime can be as simple as turning the lights off, getting swaddled, and rocking. The key is doing it every time baby goes to bed so they are signaled that it’s night time. 2. Differentiate day time from night time sleep - during the day have baby out in common spaces for naps. Allow them to nap in light, with noise, or even unswaddled! Save the blackout curtains and white noise for night. 3. Know age-appropriate wake windows and pay attention to sleep signs - your baby having not too much but not too little awake time during the day is important! Knowing your baby’s wake windows and getting the right amount of day time play and sleep is essential for good night time sleep. 4. Get as many calories in during the day as possible - make sure baby eats full meals versus snacking during the day. Five days in bed - give yourself the gift of rest for the first five days after childbirth. Embrace the coziness of your bed, allow your body to heal, and bond with your new little one. Five days on the bed - during the subsequent five days, gradually transition to a few other living areas. Sit or lay on the couch, welcome a few guests if desired, and engage in a few short, light activities around the house. Five days around the bed - spend the next five days gradually and gently introducing activities such as a short walk around the block to get some much needed fresh air or organizing all of baby’s cute new clothes. Listen to your body and pace yourself. Let the support you have continue with most of the chores.
